A varicocele is an enlargement of veins in the scrotum. Many do not need treatment, but assessment may be appropriate when there is persistent discomfort, testicular growth concerns or fertility issues. Your urologist can discuss observation and treatment options based on your symptoms and test results.
Assessment may include a physical examination, ultrasound when needed and semen analysis as part of a fertility evaluation. Treatment is not required for every varicocele.
Your clinician will review your history, examination findings and preferences before recommending a plan. Ask about expected benefits, alternatives, preparation and follow-up.
When treatment is appropriate, options may include surgery to close the affected veins or radiological embolization. Potential benefits, recurrence and risks are discussed individually.
