Types of Penile Implants

There are two primary categories of penile prostheses utilized depending on patient anatomy, lifestyle preference, and functional requirements:

• Inflatable Implants (2-Piece or 3-Piece Systems): These are the most natural-feeling devices. They consist of fluid-filled cylinders placed inside the shaft of the penis, a pump concealed inside the scrotum, and a reservoir implanted in the abdomen. Squeezing the pump transfers fluid into the cylinders to create a rigid, natural-looking erection, and a release valve allows complete deflation afterward.
• Malleable (Semi-Rigid) Rods: This system consists of paired bendable rods made of medical-grade silicone and flexible core material placed inside the penis. The penis remains firm at all times but can be manually bent upward for sexual activity or positioned downward against the body for discretion beneath clothing.

The Surgical Procedure & Recovery

Penile implant surgery is typically performed under regional or general anesthesia and usually takes about 1 to 2 hours. Most patients experience a comfortable recovery phase under medical supervision, with discharge typically occurring within 24 to 48 hours.

Initial healing of minor swelling and tenderness takes roughly 2 to 4 weeks. Once fully healed—usually around 4 to 6 weeks post-operation—patients can safely resume sexual activity with restored confidence, spontaneity, and satisfaction.
